Ear wax and how it's removed

?

Is ear wax normal?

Ear wax is part of our body's natural immune system and should naturally work its way out of your ears.

However, if earwax becomes impacted in the ear canal it may need to be professionally removed.

?

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is considered the safest method of ear wax removal. It eliminates the use of water flushing seen in traditional syringing and, maintains the ears natural immune function.

A typical ear wax appointment is 15 - 30 minutes. Our ear wax microsuction procedure is performed by qualified ear-wax mirosuction clinicians trained to use ENT developed microsuction equipment.

What should I expect?

Medical History & Ear Examination

After a warm welcome your clinician will undertake a complete ear / hearing history. This is followed by an examination of your ear canal using a device called an otoscope.

Blockage Removal

Using a method called microsuction your clinician will remove any blockages in a safe and effective manner using a suction probe which is connected to a low pressure suction device. The suction device is a medical device specially adapted for ear wax removal.

Post Removal Examination

Once all blockages have been removed your clinical will examine the health of your ear canal and ear drum.

We will provide guidance on how to best look after your ear health and any further treatment that may be required.

Hearing Check & Follow-up

If required your clinician may perform a Hearing Health Check to determine your hearing levels. This may be performed straight after your ear wax removal or arranged for a future appointment.

In some cases we may need to refer you to a further speciality. If required your clinician will write-up the required referral documents and advise you on the next best steps at no extra cost.

Ear Wax Removal

Ear Microsuction

Microsuction is our go to method of ear wax removal. It is generally considered safer than syringing / irrigation due to no water being involved and extra protection of the ear drum.

We use specialist magnification equipment to look inside your ears, whilst using a suction probe to safely and effectively remove any wax blockages from your ears.

Ear Syringing

Sometimes it is considered more effective to use syringing to removal ear wax blockages.

It is generally used when the ear wax in your ear canals is too soft to be removed via microsuction. A low pressure manual water spray is used to syringe water in your ear canal. A basin placed under your ear will collect any water and ear wax that falls out of your ear.

  • What symptoms can you experience with blocked ears
If your ears are blocked with ear wax you may notice the following symptoms; impaired hearing, ear pain, dizziness, ear itchiness, ear fullness, sudden hearing loss and even tinnitus. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to book an appointment with an Audiologist who can review your symptoms and guide you further
